Focusing on What Matters
My mom turned 96 last week. Her youngest sister turned 90 the next day. Save for seeing each other across the room at a socially distanced wedding, they haven’t been together since before the pandemic began.
They were able to get together for lunch last Tuesday to celebrate their birthdays. My cousin and my sister were providing transportation. I checked my schedule and as luck would have it, my day was stacked with meetings. I told everyone to enjoy lunch without me.
And then I had a moment of clarity. I would invite someone to miss a meeting with me in order to attend an important family event. I knew the colleagues I was to meet with would understand as well.
The world didn’t end because I missed a meeting. And I gained a memory that will last forever.
